Understanding the education experiences of Australian students who have attended multiple schools due to regular relocation with a parent in the military
Research team contact details
Description of project
This project is being undertaken as part of the Doctor of Philosophy (Education) program through the University of Southern Queensland.
The purpose of this project is to understand the education experiences of students who have attended multiple schools due to regular relocation with a parent in the Australian military. As an individual who has relocated multiple times and attended a number of schools during your education, your insights are incredibly valuable to this project.
Your participation will involve partaking in an interview that will take a maximum of one hour of your time. This interview will be conducted online via Zoom, with a face-to-face interview a possibility if you prefer, depending on location.
Examples of interview questions include:
- Can you describe what it was like for you when you started at a new school?
- Were some subjects easier to continue your learning than others? Why / How?
- How did you make friends at a new school?
After reading this Participant Information and the Statement of Consent, you will be asked to provide your consent to participant in this research by clicking “I agree/would like to participate”. You will then be asked to provide your name, email address, and the approximate number of schools that you attended, and then click “Send”.
The Principal Investigator will then contact you via the email address provided, to arrange a mutually convenient time for an interview. After the interview, there will be an opportunity for a 5-minute debrief, should you wish to do so. You will also have an opportunity to review the interview transcript should you wish to.
Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you are not obliged to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw from the project. You may also request that any data collected about you be withdrawn and confidentially destroyed. You will be unable to withdraw data collected about yourself from the commencement of data analysis.
If you do wish to withdraw from this project or withdraw data collected about yourself, please contact the Research Team (contact details at the top of this page).
Your decision whether you take part, do not take part, or take part and then withdraw, will in no way impact your current or future relationship with the University of Southern Queensland.
Your participation in this project offers an opportunity to reflect on your own schooling as an Australian military-connected student and gain a sense of clarity about these experiences.
It is anticipated that understanding these student education experiences, will add value to the currently limited shared understanding of the experiences of the military-connected community in the Australian context. The findings from this research may benefit the military-connected community, with the intent of enhancing future circumstances for Australian mobile students.
In participating in the interview there are minimal risks. However, sometimes thinking about the sorts of issues raised in the interview can create some uncomfortable feelings. If you need to talk to someone about this immediately, please contact Beyond Blue on 1300 224 636. You may also wish to consider the referral services below or consult your General Practitioner (GP) for additional support.
Privacy and confidentiality
All comments and responses are confidential unless required by law.
The interview will be recorded for transcription purposes, via Zoom recording facilities (audio file only to be used in this project) or, in the case of a face-to-face interview, an audio voice recorder. The interview will be transcribed by the Principal Investigator, Mrs Natalie Gonzalez, with the utilisation of Panopto software. You will be provided with a copy of the interview transcript for review and endorsement. You will be given two weeks to review and request any changes to the transcript before the data is included in the project for analysis.
When the research has been completed, participants may request a summary of the findings via an email to the Principal Investigator.
Any data collected as a part of this project will be stored securely, as per University of Southern Queensland’s Research Data and Primary Materials Management Procedure. Data collected will have restricted access to the research team, as listed on this application, to only be used in future research projects involving the members of this research team.
