Learning in Virtual Reality: Factors that impact learning in a head-mounted virtual reality environment | Phase 1 Survey (Open)

This project is being undertaken as part of a Doctor of Philosophy degree through the University of Southern Queensland.

This project's primary aim is to understand the extent that head-mounted display extended reality (HMD-XR) devices can support remote learning for university students. It aims to explore the experiences of participants who access learning material through HMD-XR and understand the situations in which HMD-XR devices may be suited for learning in a university context. Particular focus will be on the personal experiences of participants in the use of the device, and the real-time collaboration between participants in a virtual social environment.

Phase I of this study includes this survey, which will be used to gather information regarding attitudes towards virtual reality technology and to gather participant details for Phase II of the study.

This research is being conducted by PhD Candidate Brodie McGee. For questions relating to this study you can contact them brodie.mcgee@usq.edu.au.

At the end of this survey, you will be asked if you would like to be considered for Phase II of this study which may include using a virtual reality headset for a period of study.

Participation

Your participation will involve completion of an online questionnaire that will take approximately 15 minutes of your time.

Questions will include: demographic information, such as your age and location; the languages that you speak and have learnt in the past; and questions regarding your attitudes and views towards different technologies and their uses.

Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you are not obliged to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw from the project at any stage.

You may also request that any data collected about you be withdrawn and confidentially destroyed.

Your decision whether you take part, do not take part, or take part and then withdraw, will in no way impact your current or future relationship with the University of Southern Queensland.

Expected benefits

It is expected that this project will directly benefit you by providing information and insight into the doctoral research process, and the results may help you understand the ways in which attitudes towards technology impact learning. Selected participants that complete this questionnaire may also be asked to participant in the second phase of this project which involves learning by using virtual reality technology.

Risks

In participating in the questionnaire, there are no anticipated risks beyond normal day-to-day living.

Privacy and confidentiality

All comments and responses are confidential unless required by law.

Non-identifiable data collected from this questionnaire may be made available for future research purposes, including research projects not directly related to this initial project.

Participants of this questionnaire will be provided a link to review a summary of the research’s findings once complete.

Any data collected as a part of this project will be stored securely, as per University of Southern Queensland’s Research Data and Primary Materials Management Procedure.
