Human Research Ethics Approval Number:
Research Team Contact Details
The research team requests your participation in this study because of the need to explore the role of the Remote Education Tutor in distance education schooling that has received limited attention in the research literature. Therefore, it is important to find out who represents the Remote Education Tutor workforce in Australia and how they report the impact of this role on their personal lifestyle and professional work.
The aim of this study is to reveal the demographics of Remote Education Tutors, including their diversity, wide-spread geographical locations, and role and responsibilities. This research has evolved from the requirement for Australian preschool and school-age distance education students to have adult supervision during their school day. These are typically students who enrol in home programs of study affiliated with schools of distance education in Australia. This supervisory responsibility falls either on parents or family members who are acting as home tutors, or on individuals who are employed externally (e.g., as governesses, and distance education tutors).
This community project is being undertaken as a partnership between the University of Southern Queensland and Australian Geographically Isolated Learner Education (AGILE Incorporation Number: IA59611).
Your participation will involve the completion of an online Survey that will take approximately 20 minutes of your time. The questions will include where you are located and what you do in your role as a Remote Education Tutor (i.e., governess, home tutor, parent tutor, family tutor or distance education tutor).
There are three parts to the Survey:
- Part A Australian Remote Education Workforce
- Part B Remote Education Tutor's Personal and Professional Perspectives
- Part C Remote Education Tutor's Basic Needs Satisfaction in the Work Domain.
Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary and 100% anonymous. If you do not wish to take part, you are not obliged to do so and your decision whether you take part or do not take part will in no way impact on your current or future relationship with the University of Southern Queensland.
The research team hopes to provide insights into the work of Remote Education Tutors as well as influence policy related to decisions that impact distance education schooling.
Currently there is insufficient information about the demographics and experiences of Remote Education Tutors in Australia. The findings are intended to inform key decision makers nationally, lead to equitable support and outcomes for students and their families, and propose a professional pathway for those working as Remote Education Tutors.
It is expected that you will benefit from the experience as you will have an opportunity to reflect thoughtfully on your role as a Remote Education Tutor.
There are no other appreciable risks associated with the completion of this Survey beyond the imposition upon your time. The time required to complete the online questions is expected to be approximately 20 minutes.
