Description
This project is being undertaken as part of a Doctor of Philosophy Project and funded by the University of Southern Queensland. The purpose of this project is to investigate factors that mediate the relationship between childhood adversity and interpersonal problems in adolescents. The research requests your assistance because you are a young person aged between 14 and 18 years old and may have been in situations or events that have greatly affected your well-being.
Participation
Your participation will involve the completion of an online questionnaire that will take an average of 15 minutes and up to 30 minutes of your time.
Questions will include rating statements such as “It is hard for me to say “no” to other people.” and “I often doubt that there is a good way to solve problems that I have.”
Your participation in this project is entirely voluntary. If you do not wish to take part, you are not obliged to. If you decide to take part and later change your mind, you are free to withdraw from the project at any stage. You will be unable to remove data collected about yourself after the data has been analysed. If you wish to withdraw from this project, please contact the Research Team (contact details at the top of this form).
Your decision, whether you take part, do not take part, or take part and then withdraw, will in no way impact your current or future relationship with the University of Southern Queensland.
Expected benefits
It is expected that this project will directly benefit you by providing the opportunity to learn more about the way you cope and how you handle interpersonal relationships. The findings of this project will also benefit other young people as it will aid development of intervention for interpersonal problems among adolescents.
Participants will be entered into a prize draw and have a chance to win a $150 gift card from Myers or David Jones. An email will be sent to all participants when the survey is closed to thank them for their participation and inform them that the prize draw will be conducted soon. There will be three winners, and the winners will be informed via a separate email within two weeks of the first email. Once the winners have been contacted and their contact details for the gift card have been verified, the gift card will be sent to them via email and/or text message. Participants can opt out of the prize draw by indicating ‘No, I would like to opt out of the prize draw’ to the question 'Please confirm that you would like to be in the prize draw'.
Risks
In participating in the questionnaire, there is minimal risk, such as some discomfort or distress while responding to the questions. Sometimes thinking about the sorts of issues raised in the questionnaire can create some uncomfortable or distressing feelings. If you need to talk to someone about this immediately, you can call Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800 or chat via their webchat (kidshelpline.com.au) for 24-hour crisis support. You may also wish to consider consulting your General Practitioner (GP) for additional support.
After completing the questionnaire, a list of different support services that you can access will be displayed. You will also receive an email within a week of your participation to remind you of those support services. If you happen to score highly on some questionnaires, you will be contacted by a member of the research team to provide you with information for additional support. The same member will also follow up with you within 7 days to check in with you.
Privacy and confidentiality
All comments and responses will be treated confidentially unless required by law. Your data will not be made available publicly. De-identified data may be used for future research purposes. You can choose to not have your data used for future research by contacting the Research team (contact details below). The analysed data may be shared in non-identifiable ways. No cues or information that may make the data identifiable will be shared by people outside the research team. You can request for a summary of the research results by contacting the Research team (contact details at the top of this form).The Research team may contact you if you score highly on some questionnaires. For these purposes, it will be essential to provide an email address to the Research team. Any data collected as a part of this project will be stored securely as per University of Southern Queensland’s Research Data Management policy.
Consent to participate
Clicking the box at the end of the statement of consent, providing your email (at the end of the demographic questions) and clicking the 'Submit' button at the conclusion of the questionnare is accepted as an indication of your consent to participate in this project.
